  • I am tempted to dig it up to inspect the roots, but I won't - well not this year anyway......in the meantime I will concentrate of keeping my 3 plug clematis alive!

How are everyone's clematis doing? Did anyone get any flowers this summer?

  • I have managed to only kill one of them so far wakeshine and the other three plugs are now outside in their forever position in the soil. No photos as yet but two are growing very well, and the last one was only planted outside last week - so will take another week or so to start growing after the shock of being taken out of it's pot and planted in the garden. No flowers this year because I kept nipping the new shoots to make a more dense plant.  How are your plugs wakeshine?

Glad yours are doing so well GD!

Well two out the four I put in the ground have flowered! I decided not to follow the advice on the forum and put them into the ground instead of growing them in pots first. This was because at the time I was really busy, it was easier to put them in the ground, and they really needed out of the seedling pot. I also didn't listen to the advice to pinch of buds etc, thought I'd just leave them to it! I also don't think I planted them deep enough. Whether that means they won't do well I am not sure, but I was so excited when I saw the flowers as I wasn't expecting it.

I have one more in the ground, Star of India, which has a bud. I also have three more which I just recently put into pots (Piilu, Nelly Moser, and Ville de Lyon) . I ended up using a mix of John Innes no 2, MPC and silver sand...again, don't know if this was right but will have to see how they do, and in comparison to the ones along the fence.

Guernsey donkey2  could it have been affected by clematis wilt? Sometimes just odd stems tend to end up like that. Planting deeper is supposed to help.

Wakeshine that Mrs G Jackman is absolutely stunning. It's whiter than white! What a beautiful, open, honest face. image

  • Now of course I am envious of your flowers wakeshine, they look lovely and I am sure the plants will have gained some strong roots too. I am inspired to repeat the process again if ever there is another similar offer as I have enjoyed the nurturing stages. I will try to post some pictures soon, however as there are no flowers they will look a trifle drab compared with your stunning flowers.

Thanks Plant Pauper, I know, when I saw it I was also amazed at how pretty it is. The bud was very big and hard, and yet the flower looks delicate as you say, very open. I just hope it carries on with such good growth.

GD2 I didn't mean to make you envious lol. I am only a beginner to clematis but so far to me they don't seem like very fussy plants. But we shall see, it's only early stages. I am worried because I have not even put a trellis on the fence. I need to get some. At the moment it's just going up a string tied to top of fence and it's not a very strong string.

I get a lot of advice from a guy at my local garden centre and he told me clematis don't thrive as well in pots as in the ground. So I wasn't afraid and put them straight in the ground. Other people told me they would get lost in the flowerbed but I'm keeping an eye on them. And with flowers as bright as these I can't miss them!! But I do have three in pots, purely because I want to try and train them up the wall for some colour...I really hope they survive.

Don't you have a Morissons where you are? They had so many clematis varieties for £1.77 just recently, and still quite a few left when I went back the other day. I've seen clematis in garden centres for 10 times that price and no flowers....so I would really recommend Morissons.

  • No Morissons here wakeshine, just some good but expensive garden centres and B&Q. I bought a clematis that cost £10.00 last year which lasted approx. 2 months although I on good advice on this site I have left it in situ - just in case it should spurt into life again at some time in the future.  No, I was only joking re: envy although the flowers certainly do look good - it will be interesting to see how our clematis fare over the winter and into next spring. Mine are Montana Rubens, Blue dancer and one other which I was told was not Freckles ..... we will have to wait until it flowers next year and then may be able to put a name to it.

  • " I get a lot of advice from a guy at my local garden centre ".

Sounds about right, people buying small rooted cuttings from the corned beef merchants, by-passing the established garden centres who sell ' proper ' clematis, then asking them for cultural advice.
