My goodness - what a lot of advice to take in - sift through and then to decide which to follow and I have enjoyed reading all your comments!! Yes, it certainly is Spring here - as you can see from the leaves that are already forming not only on the acer but on some of our trees too - some in blossom too. I think I will wait before doing any drastic pruning until the plant is dormant again - however I will cut out the thinner twiggy branches and pull the pots away from the walls. I have had the plants for 2 or 3 years now and they are so attractive when in full leaf.
Yes you must visit aym280 - we have the most fantastic gardens and Guernsey often wins Floral Britain competitions - our town is a riot of colour with window boxes, planters and static floral displays. As for supermarkets there are one or two large ones and a couple of good garden centres. Our cliffs are beautiful in the spring -with plenty of paths to walk - so many different wild flowers growing on the cliffs overlooking lovely beaches - I will try to post some pictures later in the Spring. Sorry that you are freezing - we have had a couple of light ground frosts here recently but the wind and rain have been our biggest problem over the winter - hopefully those days are past us now.
Now that I have taken a closer look at the two acers I have noticed that one has a completely dead main trunk - but instead of cutting it out now - I have pruned some of the smaller branches but still intend to give the plant a thorough prune when it is resting at the end of the year.
