Shrubs / climbers to cover fences please?!
Hi everyone, I have a long thin terraced house garden. I had to strip everything back and start agin after moving in. I have tried to build up the borders but need some help for large back of border shrubs to give some height to cover some of the fences. I have trellis with roses but they are sparse and I really need some help to reduce the rectangular nature of the garden. I have some buddleia already too. The left of my garden is the sunnier side with a fence that's rickety and not mine, with the other side being sunny in the summer but pretty damp in the winter (East facing garden) Which is my fence. I was considering a lorrel and / or a forsythia. i am considering making the borders bigger too after living with the circles and getting annoyed at looking at too much fence so this will change. Any advice would be very much appreciated. I'd prefer evergreen fast growing if atall poss?

what about physocarpus - photinia - viburnum oplus - cornus elegantissima - sambucus - bay tree - hydrangea paniculta can get 5 - 6ft quite fast. Could train a prycantha up the fence.
Could try some tall perennials like Eupatorium - rudbeckia herbstone - veronicastrum . It be better with the borders bigger.
Do you mind telling me whats the small tree in the background? looks a bit like a tamarix I am just curious
Thankyou so very much. I will look all those up now - I'm getting there with my plant knowledge. And yes it is, one of only three things that were worth keeping when I moved in. Beautiful blossom in April - may!
Forsythia is good as you can let it grow tall and keep a slimmer shape, having had multiple Pyracantha against one of our fences I would say No unless you like getting stabbed by its thorns and can be very strict about shaping and keeping it trimmed, it will romp both up and outwards easily and you will lose a lot of your garden width ..it's great for birds though it is high maintenance.
solanum (potato vine) is good, both the white and blue varieties; fab tall growth, great colour and you can train and shape it. The blue is hardier.
