Multi purpose compost is light and 'fluffy', consisting totally of fibrous matter - fine for short term plantings like pots of summer bedding plants, but it soon becomes thin and powdery and lacks substance for longer term/permanent plantings.
Loam based John Innes compost has some 'real soil' to give weight and body, as well as the John Innes formulae - lots of info here http://www.johninnes.info/about.htm
