Magnolia stellata

B3B3 Posts: 27,503

I am thinking about where to plant my magnolia Stella and I am a bit concerned about the ultimate size.

Will it be ok to prune it to an acceptable size / shape? I realise this will be a few years down the line but if I get it right now I won't have to move it.

In London. Keen but lazy.

    Hi there,

M stellata,s are quite small and very slow growing. I planted a container grown stellata about 8 year ago and its just short of 2 mtrs. It's planted in heavy clay which may restrict its growth compared to a more free draining soil not too sure. But every spring it flowers it's socks off and doesn't mind a light prune to keep its shape. Compared to other magnolias it's great for smaller gardens. You shouldn't need to worry about having to prune it lots.

Hope this has helped a bit.

As long as it is not water logged Magnolias are very tolerant of clay and certainly grow better in it than in sandy soil.
