Magnolia

LieLie Posts: 39

I have just bought 2 magnolia standards to go in the front of the house.the soil type described is `magnolias prefer a rich, moist, well drained, acid to neutral soil.`

Shall I mix 1/3 ericaceous compost 1/3 standard garden compost 1/3 well rotted manure together? Bit confused on how to give these trees a great start.

Looking forward hearing from you all!

Many thanks, Lie

Do you know what soil type you have? If its fairly neutral, I'd just add dig in the manure.

Hi Ceres, forgot to mention a crucial part. They will be in large pots which is why i really want to nail the soilimage any suggestions? Regards! Lie

If in pots, I'd use 60% John Innes #3, 20% garden compost, 10% well rotted manure and 10% ericaceous.  The JI #3 is a superb base for permanent container plantings. image

A trowel in the hand is worth a thousand lost under a bush.
