Trellis - neighbour says no!

Tandy2Tandy2 Posts: 10

Hi, my neighbour has said no to us putting up a trellis against their wall. I had an idea to cement posts and use wires, and then plant roses - but their foundations come out into the raised bed (which I hadn't realised) and would therefore result in the trellis being too far away from the wall, The wall is a long brick extension which I am desperate to try and grow something up/against it as it 'looms' over our lawn at the back of our house. I have attached a photo below - ideas will be gratefully accepted!

You don't need to grow against,

    grow in front of it

Those borders look a bit narrow to me and the plants will always be a bit on the dry side because of the rain shadow and wick effect of a wall.  Can you make them wider (1m is usually considered a minimum)?  That would give you room to put in supports, too, avoiding the foundations.

A trowel in the hand is worth a thousand lost under a bush.

I didn't look very carefully at the photo. That's not room enough for anything.Add at least a metre. I've gone metricimage

Hi Tandy, you could make the bed a bit higher although it would take a lot of soil. Failing that you could pop some obelisks in to grow things up.

They've got a bit of a nerve if the concrete from the foundations is on your side, and stopping you from putting posts in.

I agree with nutcutlet; just grow shrubs in front of the wall.

Based in Sussex, I garden to encourage as many birds to my garden as possible.

Thank you so much for your suggestions, it is great to have ideas on what options are available. I have lived in military quarters before moving into my own house last year. Happy gardening to you all!

  • Depends on the size of your garden and where the sun is but i agree with the wider bed. Drop the raised bed, add some compost and either put in supports or--- plant some tall growing flowering shrubs.  If its a single story extension these will soon cover it. How about a cotoneaster horizontalis against the wall- birds love the bright red berries in winter and it has flowers in spring.

Shrub roses reach a good height with little maintenance, or wrap a climber around a post. These can be planted as part of a mixed border with upright shrubs for different flowering times. ,Add clematis and climbing nasturtiums for the summer to scramble through when flowers are finished. Perennial sweet peas also good for this. You can also underplant with bulbs etc. in spring.

I have photinia which also grows to about 15 ft if left unpruned. just prune out the forward facing shoots.

Hope this is helpful but all takes time.

If this is your first year at house i would wait and see what comes up because from photo  it looks like someone has done the work for you and it could look very nice and save you some money not mending something that's not broken.
