Hedgehog Footprint Tunnel
Last October we saw a family of hedgehogs in the lane adjacent to our house at 5 a.m. I would like to make the footprint tunnel described in this month's GW but don't know where to buy carbon powder. The web is very technical and no help. Can I just grind down charcoal for the barbecue or for drawing? If not, can anyone help with where to but it., please.

Have a mini stick/twig bonfire (in the barbecue?) and collect up the charcoal at the end?
I have a trail cam set up in my garden as this is a good way of finding out how many hogs you have.It also means you can identify certain individuals and watch some of their behaviour.
A tunnel can show that you have hogs but not always how many and what size.
I have had my trail cam for 2 years now and was the best birthday present I have had!
Thank you both. We finally ground down charcoal and mixed it with sunflower oil, placing it in the very solid tunnel my husband made. This morning we discovered the hedgehog footprints without a doubt. We have been tracking droppings for a week or so but the prints in our garden leave no doubt! I'm a little reluctant at this stage to go down the camera route as we have one in a bird box and nothing has appeared - although we have had nests in our other bird boxes and in our hedges. Perhaps they know they're being watched?
Hi enilorac2, have you tried a feeding station (google if unsure) with dry cat chicken/meat flavoured biscuits and a shallow bowl of water for the hogs? I attach an infrared motion detector night camera to our tree and watched last years hedgie go in and out nightly. Super interesting to watch and absolutely priceless in aiding them. I helped out at a hedgehog rescue centre for a while so may be able to answer some of your questions
