Which trees to plant in a small ish garden?

Hello all,

We're planning on turfing our garden and planting five? not too tall trees (4m max) in a random arrangement around the space. My question is, what sort of trees to plant? they can't be too big - the space is about 6m x 10m and a quarter of that is pond.... I mostly want attractive bark, deciduous and not anything that'll create lots of of shade. Ideally native and or fruit!

The garden is south west facing with a workshop across one end casting shade across half the lawn in the afternoon. The soil is clay and neutral.

I was thinking a birch cultivar - mostly because of the bark, but they'll get too tall I think. Then I thought a cherry - preferably an eater...suggestions for which one/s to go for much appreciated (doesn't have to be a cherry at all of course, all ideas welcome).

Many thanks in advance!

  • I have 3 silver birch - wonderful trees that don't cast very dark shadows and I have also seen them in containers - which could restrict growth

I'd echo Tetley's Amelanchier. Delightful in several seasons. It's a very small space if you want five trees though. You could also try a Sorbus  (Mountain Ash/ Rowan) which have fairly light canopies - but bear in mind that 5 trees of any kind  will create a fair bit of shade once they get going in a space that size.

You'll also have to be careful with leaves in  the pond so make sure you can  get access to net it if you pick deciduous trees. image

It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....

I live in west central Scotland - not where that photo is...

  • Maybe because I am hungry but my thoughts turned to hazelnut, cherry, greengage, plum and apple. Self fertile, all available on various rootstock sizes different, blossom times all deciduous but most importantly DELICIOUS!

just of for coffee 'and a little something' to stave the rumbles ; )

Thank you all very much for taking the time to suggest ideas - as a new forum member I'm very touched. I'll let you know what I decide.
