They can be short lived plants Lyn. I don't grow them although I had one in a previous garden. They don't do very well up here anyway because of the wet conditions - they like a nice sunny well drained spot. Perhaps try a few online nurseries to see if you can find a darker one that might suit you?

Thanks to everyone. I have discovered that the Ceanothus Repens is a small, low growing one - which I can find a home for. Can anyone suggest a dark blue Ceanothus with an upright habit? I can't remember the tall variety I left behind in my previous garden and would like a similar one.

I read (article by Monty Don) that Ceanothus don't do well after 4-5 years but benefit from pruning after they have flowered.

Ceanothus Concha is the one I had. Lots of flowers and a strong colour.
