Last frost help???
in Talkback
Hello everyone,
I'm relatively new to gardening and wondered if anyone could tell me a reliable source to go by for last frost dates?
I live near Skipton (North / West Yorkshire) “The gateway to the Dales” and am hesitant to start sowing seeds outside or anymore indoors, as I’m running out of space
I’ve Googled last frost dates and they seem to range from Mid-March to Late April… any advice would be appreciated?!
Thanks

I'm Harrogate, so not far from you. First week of June up here I'm afraid. For things like tomatoes, runner beans etc. It might be a couple of weeks earlier if we have a good year, but to be sure, wait til June to plant anything tender out, and make sure they are well hardened off during the day first.
You can get frosts in May too. Its always a bit of a gamble and I'm sure everyone has been caught out at least once but I reckon mid to late May to be certain of not losing plants to icy conditions.
First week of June to make sure. It really depends what you're growing though. Most years, hardy annuals will be fine sown outside in April, but you have to look at your own conditions - if the ground's soggy and cold, they may rot.
I only grow toms undercover up here - our temps are too low at night. I start them in March, and by the time they're too big for windowcills, it's usually fine to get them outside undercover.
Anything that needs starting undercover can usually be sown in March, but it depends what facility you have for hardening off, cold frame, greenhouse etc., as you can easily run out of room. That's the issue you seem to be experiencing just now!
I live in west central Scotland - not where that photo is...
Personally I use long range weather forecasts. These people are very accurate. They don't give actual dates but their long range forecast's got this winter down to a T and last summer what there was of it.

How long have you lived there ? Ask local silver gardeners should put you right ..
Thank you so much everyone! I will check these out and also go down to the local allotments and grill the gardeners for last years dates!
Really appreciate the replies
Or ask at a local garden centre.
