Robins holding up business

VerdunVerdun Posts: 23,348

went to use my secateurs kept in toolshed.  A birdsnest has been built over them.

Ah well! I have another pair of secateurs but not happy with these squatters.  image

The young usually emerge to perch on the beams....tatty looking but wonderful.image  And they tend to accompany me in early spring when working in nearby veg patch....luverly image

    But how lovely Verd  image

At least they won't expect doughnuts from you...image

The little house at the corner of my road, diagonally across the road, has lots of lovely shrubbery and fence covering climbers along the side of their property, so I think most of the robins and blackies etc are nesting in there. Much as I'd love them to come and nest here, I don't have enough cover yet, so I'm happy to supply meals and a bath for them  image

Don't let them hold up business Verdun. We had a blackbird in the mower shed last year and she coped with all the coming and going, including the ride-on mower being started up right underneath the nestimage

I've always found that once the eggs are laid and brooding has commenced  the birds are pretty tolerant of comings and goings.  However, if their investment in the nest site hasn't been so great then they may well move and find another site if disturbed too much.   But of course no one would intentionally disturb them - apart from any other reason, it's illegal.

Bluetits have been popping in and out of the nestbox on the trunk of the ash tree on the Shady Bank.  I think the robins, wrens and blackbirds are nesting in the neighbours' huge laurel hedges.

  • I have seen magpies flying with nesting material.

i cut some of my hair today, and left it on the bird table.

Robins have nested in my garage over the paast years, despite my coming and going

I've seen a few birds flitting about with nesting materials so I think they're nesting in neighbours gardens there's nothing in mine.

I did have a resident robin fledgling the other summer who scuttled about after me looking for food. It was very sweet but did make me jump quite a few times when a brown fluffy thing flashed past me when I least expected it!

Last year a couple of sparrows brought their two offspring to my garden to show them off. They skiddled about along the fence. Very sweet really image

Lidl have some good secateurs in at the moment. Treat yourself , verdun, and retrieve the other pair later.
