Newbie Help!

Hi All

Been "googling" for help deciding what to grow in pots this year and I found this place! I grow things in large pots ( have 4 dwarf fruit trees ) as don't have any soil in the garden. I was thinking about doing runners again this year, toms, chillis but was pondering sweetcorn. I've read in difference pleases its possible but wonder if any of you have done it?

Also I recently got one of those green houses which you build yourself and cover in a think plastic sheet, its big enough to walk in and have shelves but are they any good?

Cheers

Paul

  • Cheers, I acquired some bricks from a friend to help weigh them down, was just thinking about starting sowing the toms and chillis this weekend and wondered if it was too early as the plastic greenhouse doesn't keep the heat in.

I grew sweet corn in grow bags one year, they grew very well but they dry out very fast so keep up with the watering and the feeding!

I have also had one of those plastic green houses, the plastic sheeting will most probably need replacing every year, as mine got a little battered by the elements! but they're great for sowing seeds in, and they are good fun!

I don't think id risk sowing seeds outside just yet, (depending on where you live) here we still have lots of frost and cold nights on the way that will wipe out any germinating seeds. but you can for sure start sowing indoors, as long as you have a sunny window sill that they can happily stay until the weather gets warmer.

    Hope this helps a little?

I grow potatoes, carrots and peas in pots/bags with success, and tomatoes in a couple of plastic grow houses next to the greenhouse.  To weigh it down I always have a bag of tomato growing compost, or ordinary potting compost, on the bottom shelf at all times and this keeps it sturdy.  I find the top of the plastic usually goes first so when it tears I cover it with the adhesive transparent book film that you can buy from Smiths etc.  If windy weather is forecast I tie string around the grow house at each shelf level to keep the plastic cover tight.

  • Hi, Sweetcorn needs to be grown outside in a block for wind pollination between the plants, you'd have to set up a few pots next to each other. I grew mine outside last year in a small sheltered raised bed of 1.5x1 metre and had very few full cobs so I'm moving it to a windier spot this year to improve pollination.

I've grown tomatoes really well in the plastic greenhouse, after sowing indoors first, just make sure you pack it away in winter as mine flew into next door's garden when I left it up.

    Good luck.
  • it would be easier to hand polinate corn if you only have space to grow a few. if you want to polinate by wind you need like 25 plants to get a good result

  • Thanks guys, think a few grow bags will be on the shopping list this weekend. Managed to get some bricks to anchor the greenhouse down but will keep my compost on the bottom shelves.
