trough planter

I have a trough planter in a prominent position in front of a low window . I would like some plant ideas so It will be vibrant all year with seasonal bursts of colour

Spring: bulbs for first part of year (crocus, daffs, tulips)
Summer: Lavender. Salvia. Pick the longer flowering varieties or 2 types to extend flowering. Plus add some dwarf Nicotiana for scent (annual, you'll get 6 in a tray cheaply and if you're lucky you'll get 6 months flowering, I have).
Late summer: Rudbekia, Sedum.
Winter/year round: Add a small standard like Ilex Crenata, and some trailing Ivy. Could add a grass for structure too, and leave the fronds up through the winter, cutting down in Feb for the new season.
The bees will love it. Could also add a trailing verbena for the butterflies.
What size is it, what aspect, and what else is round it that might cast shade for instance. The size in particular affects choices.
