clematis pruning

i have 2 clematis i think they're both ( on certainly is ) hagley hybrid, which only flowered last sept for first time, the have lovely new growth 3 foot up but nothing below.. I know I should chop them to around 30 cm...I don't know if I dare, the new shoots look so healthy!

If you leave them rosemummy they can get a bit top heavy. I'd be brave. If you can look after little ones you can chop a clematis. They won't cry or have a tantrum! They just smile at you later in the yearimage

What are they growing against? I have a few clematis. One I allow to grow unpruned and unrestrained over a large wisteria. Others, growing up a bare wall  need to be cut down to allow new growth to cover the lower part of the wall. Remember that clematis need cold feet and a hot head. (Roots in shade, foliage and flowers in the sun!)
