Newbie Questions

Hi there, this is my first year with an allotment and second year growing bits in my own garden. I have a few questions I'm hoping for some help with?

I got a free onion set and have merrily planted around half in some mini pot modules. I kept around half back to direct plant on my plot in a few weeks. The spares which seemed a bit hit and miss as to whether they would grow, such as small or spindly I popped in between some container strawberries as a trial. After a few weeks and a bit more reading I've realised i have planted them wrong... I'm not sure how I managed it but mine have maybe a cm under the soil but are basically balanced on top. I've realised that most guides show the mini bulbs tucked in pretty deep into the soil... will mine survive? Should I try to get them up without upsetting the roots too much and tuck them in deeper?

My second question is around my garlic. Half is in modules waiting to go on the plot and the other half I have put in the space around both a quince and medlar tree, which I planted in large containers. I thought this would be a good way to utilise the space. After more reading I've realised that garlic doesn't like to be damp but the tree's do... again, should I dig them up and replant?

Thank you everyone who answers, I realise this is all trial and error but I would like a few successes in the first year image

  • I did exactly the same thing with onions last year, I partly grew them in a pot which was far too crowded and managed to move them into the plot with good success. Again i planted too shallow by mistake, the ones I took out of the plot to plant deeper were very disturbed and grew less overall than those I simply left alone. I think once the onions get more established it becomes more detrimental to move them. Some of my onions last year were a bit exposed so I simply scooped more soil around them.

not sure about moving the garlic though
  • I planted garlic somewhere too damp last year and it simply rotted away. This year, it's in a much drier bed and is coming up beautifully (I planted it back in December), apart from where the cat sat on it! I have no idea if the stuff you've planted will grow if you move it, and it may well be that the rot has set in if you planted it a while ago. But since the chances are that it won't grow, I'd probably try moving it (but give the stuff you've not planted yet the priority in terms of location to hopefully get the better crop). Does that make sense?
