why so expensive?

Why are Sungold tomato seeds so expensive?  The packet I bought states approx. 8 seeds for £2.99, although there are 13 seeds in pack.

Can I save seeds from my crop for next year?  I will be growing Sungold and Moneymaker this year.  Thanks, Mags

They're  F1 hybrids.  You pay for that, the cross needs to be repeated every year.

They won't seed true. There will be people on ebay selling seed saved from Sungold tomatoes,  they won't be Sungold

Got mine off ebay - premierseeds for £1.79 10 seeds very good supplier of seeds. I am trying suncherry premium this year, the red version of sungold, got them off T&M for £1 on offer last year.

Sungold getting much cheaper now as quite an old type - New varieties F1s always pricey initially. I try to get the most expensive free by making it the 4th/5th choice with T & M when 4/5th choice £1 or free.

  • Sungolds are consistently one of the most popular varieties, so you can't blame the seed companies for making money on one of their flagship products.

And F1s are more expensive to produce than non-F1s.

Some ebay and amazon sellers may be legitimate, but others aren't quite what they appear, so buyer beware.

Similar varieties like Golden Cherry F1 are less well known, and have been available at T&M for just 99p for some time.

Biofreak, it doesn't matter whether you add expensive seeds first or last (or always, for you aging goths image) in your T&M basket, it's the cheapest you get free if you buy 5, not the last added. But T&M and others like Mr F's occasionally have 'all seeds £1 this weekend' type offers, if you really wanted bargain and genuine Sungolds.

That's not how it showed up on my last 2 years Invoices - I always got the most expensive choice, provided I placed it right on my Order cheaper or free. - What's a goth??? - Have just sown Glacier cherry tomatoes - delighted with them last year. Sweeter than Sungold and just as prolific.
