Hedging ideas

I am putting in a small hedge on my patio. It does not need to be big, a couple of feet. The patio gets lots of sunshine. I would like something with a bit of colour or that flowers. Any suggestions please?

What about lavender? Would smell nice on the patio too. It likes sun and well drained soil.

    Here is mine.

One of the euonymus family would look good. No flowers but a lot of vibrant, evergreen foliage.

http://www.bbc.co.uk/gardening/plants/plant_finder/plant_pages/11270.shtml The one illustrated here is Emerald n Gold but you can get cream edged versions should you be looking for something cooler. They can be trimmed into a low hedge and have a habit of layering thereby providing more plants for free. They are also very easily rooted from cuttings.

  • If you could stretch to a little higher, try photinia red robin.

Evergreen / green but new leaves are bright red across 6 months of the year at least hence the name.

You'd need to buy small and trim it to keep to 1m.

Stay away from box, it gets blight.
  • Thank you for your suggestions! They all seem like good ideas. My garden is a blank canvas at the moment, having just been done. It needs life in it.

Have a browse on some of the specialist hedge growers sites Jennifer. That might give you some ideas too.

In a sunny position, Hebes are a great alternative. There are plenty of smaller ones and they flower too. Minimal pruning and tidying - just a trim after flowering image

It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....

I live in west central Scotland - not where that photo is...
  • I saw Brachyglottis Senecio 'sunshine', this also looks nice. image

..the Lavender hedge as highlighted above, and which is absolutely gorgeous by the way, would also be my choice.  I grow the usual 'Hidcote' variety..
