What is taking over my garden

  • Mine is fairly grim it looks exactly like the stuff you make pots with.  I was told not to walk on it while it is was wet but  am not sure it will ever dry out..

Guess I have been lucky with previous gardens and had decent soil so this is all new to me

Plenty of manure, compost and grit added to your clay will pay dividends MsGFingers. Add some every time you pant something new too. Those additions will really open the structure up and allow you to garden more easily.  image

I've gardened on clay all my life and it's by far the best medium for plants if you get the structure right. Vital for me to do it because of the high rainfall and long, cold winters, which doesn't favour many plants.

It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....

I live in west central Scotland - not where that photo is...
  • Thanks again to everyone who took the time to reply. What a great resource given no one I know likes gardening so advice is thin on the ground.

I am know thinking of my clay in a much more positive light.

  • Looks really pretty if some seedlings are left in the herbaceous bed. its the annual willowherb. I left some in as I wasn't sure what it was. Made a lovely show. Bees loved it. Just cut the seed spikes off before they blow everywhere and remove any that are in the wrong place.

I am so glad you asked this question... I have this everywhere and garden on Clay too.  I just need a dryish day to crack on with the weeding...!!  Good luck with your garden hope you get them all! image

A lot easier to dig up than an old bamboo that's for sureimage

  • Landlubber quite agree. My black bamboo is in a huge pot!

MsGreenFingers, just watch that it doesn't escape out from the holes in the pot. It might if your pot's on soil but obviously not if it's on the patio etc.image

  • Yep it's on soil. Good lord hadn't thought. Wonder if I put some pond liner underneath would that act as a barrier?

I would imagine so.  I could be wrong and maybe it wouldn't be able to get out but bamboo would be a nightmare to eradicate if it did travel out from your pot.  Maybe put the pond liner under the pot (a piece the same size so you can't see it) just in case?
