Hepaticas - can they thrive in a stone sink?

I planted a small collection of hepaticas with sand, gravel and good compost in a small stone sink in semi shade in the early autumn but they look stunted and sad at the moment.  Would they be better off in soil ?  My garden is very wet clay  at the moment - I live in the high Cotswolds.  Any advice please?

Hepaticas really don't like clay in any shape or form.  Mine live on a gritty raised area where they spread gently about, with very, very good drainage - more grit than soil.  They won't mind being rained on, but will object very much indeed to wet feet.

  • Thank you both - good to hear confirmation that at least I was right not to put them in to the garden soil.
