Thick electrical tape wrapped around the bottom and up to soil level worked for me with fresh hazel used for an obelisk. Alternatively, if you can find sturdy lengths of about equal thickness to push into the ground for the main supports, putting them in upside down should stop them rooting.

Can I dip them in some brilliant solution that will stop them growing but not affect the soil around them?

Try boiling water.  Just the bottom 30cm should be enough.  But don't leave them in the ground when you clear the beans.

Upside-down has its supporters, but I doubt it would make a stable bean support.
