Grass cuttings on borders?

We mowed the lawn and as all compost recycling was full decided to spread the cuttings over the borders - 'Surely this is of some nutrient value' I thought!

Now I'm not so sure - the borders look quite untidy now image

Will it have been of any benefit? how long until it rots itself down and disappears?

    Oh dear image

    I did spread it quite thinly, I might go over it with a hoe next weekend and see if I can mix it in with the soil a bit!!!

    Jonesk, there's also the risk of grass seed in the clippings too.

    I always have too many grass cuttings for the compost bins so I pile them up in an out of the way place. You can leave them alone and they will, very slowly, turn into compost but I never have enough so as soon as we stop cutting I turn the heap, breaking up lumps and mixing it all up. I do this as often as I can and it soon turns into lovely compost. What's more, if you go out to work in the garden on a freezing day, a few minutes' turning will make you warm as toast!

    I only ever compost them. Never cut without a grass box either - don't like them left on the grass image

    It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....



    I live in west central Scotland - not where that photo is...
