Problem Trees

I would like to plant a small attractive tree on our front lawn. We tried last year to nurture a small maple but it suffered very badly with wind burn as it is a corner plot and catches the wind. Can anyone suggest a little tree with year round interest that is also quite hardy?  Many thanks. Sandy

Many thanks Tetley, the tree you recommended sounds just the one. It's very pretty with all year interest but hardy. Perfect!

I would counsel against putting any tree in a lawn. Makes mowing difficult. Put it to one side.

There is a flower bed already dug out of the lawn where the previous tree was so mowing carefully is ok, I plant colourful bedding around it while it's small and trim with shears. Thanks for any advice though.
