Compost Direct

Morning all, has anyone used Compost Direct to order compost in bulk online?  we make our own but not yet in sufficient quantities for what we need, so we're thinking of buying in bulk online but worried about the quality.  We would rather go on recommendation.  Any online suppliers you would recommend, or any to avoid?  Thanks.

I've used them recently. I bought their multi-purpose topsoil and mulch to put in a new border. It all looked like good stuff as far as I can tell. Obviously I can't analyse it and the plants have only just gone in but I'm confident they'll be OK.

I used them a couple of years ago, seemed fine (I'm no expert) I bought two bulk bags of manure.  I do remember their being tons of little flies afterwards but I don't know if this is the norm.  They soon went after a few weeks.

I've just ordered the same from Compost Centre, who everyone recommends round here.  http://www.thecompostcentre.co.uk/landscape.html I've tried looking at the website to see if they only deliver to a certain area but can't see.  Maybe worth giving them a call.  I'm only paying £55 for a bulk bag inc delivery.

I have to add though I'm having to wait 2-3 weeks for delivery as so busy, but that's fine with me as in no particular hurry. image

DISASTER. I loved using them for years, but something is going seriously wrong at the moment. 3 week delay with no communication - then they subcontracted delivery in a normal lorry with *no means to unload*. You couldn't make it up. I'm extremely disappointed, as I used to rely on them, and the quality was good.

  • I had a bag of topsoil from them a couple of months ago, seemed to me to contain quite a lot of pieces of wood, the delivery driver did have a hoist on his lorry & lifted the bag over my front hedge onto the lawn. However, a recent order of what was supposed to be Manure was delivered ( after having to remind them ) by a subcontractor who could only leave it outside ( more than my jobs worth ) on the public footpath ! The Manure !! seems to be mainly fine straw / sawdust that dry that it blew into my face etc. when unloading it into my wheelbarrow & I cannot see any trace of any horse dung etc. It bore no resemblance to what they supplied me with a couple of years ago & after complaining they offered to come & pick it up, bit to late after having spread it on the garden !!! Shame as they used to be good but I will not be using them again or recommending them.

What did you think of the compost from The Compost Centre Peanuts?
It does seem a good price.

    I recently had a 36 x 75L bags from CPA Horticulture for £140.
Looks good stuff, identifiable dollops of what there should be and looks and smells good.
I was about to order another load when I came across this updated thread

  • Here is the reply to the complaint I made about the quality of the Manure I received from them which I paid £78 for :-

Thank you for your email unfortunately we cannot guarantee the exact same product previously as this is an organic matter, we use the cow bedding which is made up of straw and small pieces of wood.

So there you have it from the Horses ( or should it have been the cows ! )  mouth !!

Sorry to hear of your experience.
If it were me, I'd leave a Google review for the company so others can see (as well as Compost Direct) and do the same on Facebook.

I've recently had 36 75L bags of horse manure from CPA Horticulture (2,700 litres) for £140 - I was pleased with the quality and have since had a 2nd load - and will probably get a 3rd load if the weather continues to hold. There's a lot of wood shavings but also straw and identifiable lumps of the real thing.
