In response to a query from Spud, try astilbes on your heavy clay soil. Astrantias too. Japanese painted ferns. Acteas/cimicifugas too. Grasses like hackonechloa and various sedges would enjoy it there .
Heleniums like clay, RHS did a page about it a while ago although I can't find it. Hardy geraniums and daylillies will cope. All roses will love it pulmonaria will too. Heleianthus will cope as well even sage and rosemary will cope as long as there's plenty of sun.
