Need more info - what aspect - sun or shade etc. What sort of size are you looking for?
I use Heucheras and Tiarellas, Pachysandra and prostrate Gaultherias in shady areas. All fairly small. Vinca is fine too but many people find it invasive. Osmanthus burkwoodii is good too - bigger than the aforementioned, as is Sarcococca.
Most of my 'sunny' plants are in raised beds to counteract the clay, but you'll get more suggestions from others for that aspect
It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....
