Collecting rainwater for your garden

Hello everyone,

I would like to set-up a simple rainwater collection system to water the garden and wash the car etc. Does anyone have any recommendations or experience in this?

There is an old water butt in the garden but it is dirty and hasn't got much rain in it, plus it's got lots of moss and sticks and all sorts in it, so i'm wondering that the best method is?

Thanks!

Linda

You can get drainpipe diverters which you attach to your downpipes which channel the water into butts sited next to the downpipes. Easy to install.

Ok thanks Dave that sounds like a practical solution. how much water can you collect? will it be enough to keep my small garden well watered?

  • Hi Linda,

I have a full system consisting of a water butt, pump and rainwater diverter and filter, which all work very well and I’ve actually found my usage has gone down considerably too. Some companies will give you a free diverter when you buy a water butt but I found after using this for a few weeks it got blocked up and caused all sorts of problems. Emptying out a full water butt of rainwater is no easy task. I had the misfortune of having to do this once after bad weather.

In the end I found a very good one which actually filters the water before going in to your waterbutt. So it works much more effectively and is easily installed on your downpipe. It was a while ago that I bought it online and it’s still on there now. I believe it was called Gutter Mate. Good luck. If you need a pump to use a hose I also have experience with those also. It took me a few attempts before I got the right one.

    Warm Regards,

    John.
