ideas to fill 1645 sq feet area

Hello.. I have an area of 1645sq foot..my thoughts. 3 x rotation allotment beds. 1 x permanent bed for rhubarb, strawberries etc. 1 x seed / ornamental bed. 1 x Comfrey feed area. Compost Bins x 3 and water area. Mini orchard area Considering Bee Hive area, bird feeders etc and wildlife pond.. is this area big enough to accommodate this?. Should separate the areas? I was thinking allotment and pond area 1. Beehive area 2. Orchard area 3? Any ideas and suggestions would be most appreciated.. regards Steve

Could you give an idea of dimensions? I'm guessing 20ft by 80foot at the moment. Is it shaded by trees at any point?

Does it get sun all day long?

Have you got a photo,? You can upload a photo using the tree icon in the tool bar.

Hi..I will try and upload a photo tomorrow. It is bare at the minute and used to be for veg growing by the previous owner..the land is part of our garden. It's completely south facing. And exposed to fields where the wind is strong in winter . It's also on a slight incline north to south direction. For the past 3 years we have landscaped the other part of the garden and renovated the house we are now ready to start preparing the allotment / working area

Sounds like an interesting project Steve34. A before and after photo would be good to see. Like the idea of the bee hive and orchard.

Photos of before and after would be nice, that seems a lot to cram into 20' wide garden though.

I think Steve means his garden is 1645' X 1645'

Gardening on the wild, windy west side of Dartmoor.

Big difference between square feet and feet square, as has been debated on another thread.

  • Why not draw a diagram, I find this always best to do, if you can make it to scale it will really help clear your mind, then you can make little cut outs of various elements of your design and move them around. The cut outs have to be to scale as well.

Its good fun to do, and will enable you the flexibility to change and move your 'elements' around.

I would also recommend for the pond a solar fountain, or solar oxygenator so that it reduces maintenance and cleaning, I got one from Powerbee http://www.powerbee.co.uk/solar-outdoor-fountains.html

they are great! you know also for great ideas you can visit this pinterest page :

    hope this helps you x

Yeah I agree...I want to use it as an allotment with fruit trees around thre edge. However, we are only a family of 3 and all the space to grow would be to much veg and fruit etc so thought of breaking it up into small mini areas. Talking 1 hive, approx 6 fruit trees and 4 beds to grow? I would do it as a 3 year project as to much in one go. I just want to plan it out now so I don't have to keep moving it. Our garden is approx 80 meters long x 30 meters wide front to back. We have made a lovely formal garden for us to sit in and the bottom half will be a working garden. Shed, wood, greenhouse, chickens, allotment with possible extras I have mentioned. My ambition is to get in the NGS. I am knew to gardening but love it with much passion.

Thought I was losing my mind as I just posted on your other thread Steven! image

But I'll repeat myself briefly - bit at a time, and do enough to stay motivated, otherwise it gets daunting image

It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....

I live in west central Scotland - not where that photo is...
