Fruit problems

Has anybody got any ideas? Last year in the wild section of our garden, the blackberry fruits were all ruined with black mouldy goo on them and the established plum tree produced no fruit at all. The black currant bush and the cherry tree produced good crops does anybody know why?

I would be grateful for a response.

It was a very cool summer last year Mark, a lot of wild blackberries produced small fruit which was later affected by the cool August we had. It didn't do many people any favours. As for the plum it was a very cool spring as well again not good for pollinators. Plum trees need an annual prune as well, although not a careful prune like apples. You need to remove older wood and create an open bowl shaped tree which encourages fruiting. As its an established tree you need to prune them midsummer. If you take a look at the RHS website there are quite clear instructions there on pruning them. As for your wild blackberries cut out the old fruited stems if you can get in there. The stems thrown out last year will fruit this year and hopefully the weather will be better this coming year.
