Using soot on the veg patch

I have just been given a bag of soot by our friendly chimney sweep who informs me it is good my veg plot. He has an allotment himself. Can anyone give me any advice on how to use it please?

  • Yes, certainly before the advent of slug pellets and the like, Victorian gardeners would trickle a ring of it around plants they needed to protect from slugs & snails.

I miss not having soot in the veg plot especially good for beetroot, used to scatter on the soil and rake in before planting.
