Bare root has already started sprouting in packet?

Hi, I have just bought a pair root plant from the supermarket. It came in a box so I couldn't see inside but upon opening it I noticed it it had sprouted already. The new growth is around 4 inches and looks pale as it hasn't had any light. So my question is should I plant it and leave the pale sprout alone or should I plant it but chop off the growth to the base? Will the plant start to sprout again if I do chop it down? Thanks Craigh image

I would plant it with the shoot in tact - it will soon green up when exposed to the light.  Its a good sign that its alive and kickingimage.  Be careful with it though, as the shoot might be a bit delicate and you don't want the knock it off.  What type of plant is it ?  That will be a clue as to whether it will send up more shoots, or whether this is likely to be the only one.

Plant it and pile up a bit of soil over most of the new shoot to protect it. image

I would pot it up and put it somewhere light but not too sunny for a week or so before moving it to a sunny window ledge.  I lost a few plants like yours by exposing them to sunshine before they had toughened up.

On further inspection, I took out the 3 plants from the packet and At the base of the new growth it was all wet and soggy on all 3 and the new growth just pulled away very easily from the base and was quite slimey. Does that mean the plants have rotted or should they be ok?

    I've potted them up anyway

Take them back as "not fit for purpose" and buy elsewhere I reckon.

Well I took it back to tesco and I actually got a new one. I checked it in store and the new one seems fine but it has made me think twice and getting these plants from supermarkets again!
