Bare Root Strawberry
in Fruit & veg
I have just received some bare root strawberry plants and I wasn't sure if I should plant them now or wait for the risk of frosts to pass

so long as the ground isn't frozen , or waterlogged, I'd get them in the ground sooner , rather than later.
Give them a good soaking and get them in the ground. It is essential the roots fatten and spread as soon as possible. It would need to be a hard long frost to harm them so get them planted.

Hi
if you cannot plant them pot them in pots to start them off growing and when the weather and ground is suitable in the next month get them planted.
the picture shows about forty plants I transplanted off runners last year, and they will also be planted soon, which will give me two beds with about forty plants
They are really easy to multiply in numbers and once you have them you never need to buy any more unless you want a different type/variety

I've always thought that strawberries loose vigour after three years and plants which are older should be disposed of. If your plants are three years old or over I wouldn't bother planting them. Are the roots white and long and healthy? If not, are they infected by weevils or grubs? If so compost them.
Hi
i do compost my strawberries every three years and create more from them like in my picture above with runner cuttings.
my other bed mentioned is only 1 year old so will also rotate that next year and move it to another part of my garden that is sunny but after fruiting this year will collect as many runners needed to start the process over again
