Does anybody know the origin of the saying "rabbits" or even "white rabbits" on the 1st day of the month? We woke up this morning and that was the first thing we said and then we wondered why we did it! My OH who's a Londoner said he'd never heard of it until he met me down here in Bath, so is it an old country saying?
Actually I lie, it was the second thing, after " would you like a cup of tea" !
Hi Lizzie27, both my mum and dad were Londoners and we always said White rabbits (and no returns) on the 1st of every month as well as Pinch punch first of the month. To be answered by .....a pinch and a kick for being so quick
Its meant to bring you luck, but has to be said before midday.
Some say its to do with medievil times and witches. And others say its to do with ww2
Trying to post while no virus is on my screen but think my tablet is very poorly, maybe needs a tab!et? haven't been able to read with adverts popping up all over the place but Dove has kept me posted.
Greetings to all! Weekend out went well and I danced my socks off Saturday night! It was so successful that its hoped that it will become a monthly event gig Sunday wasn't so well attended which we knew it wouldn't be as who wants to go partying on a Sunday unless there's a bank holiday Monday after it! so the next is easter Sunday I've taken a day off work today as yesterday was a disaster so having an organising day at home. Also managed to sow some phlox and snap dragon seeds make a lasagne and get washing on the line and that's after being on hold and listening to the same six songs with 3 mobile for over an hour....twice! I'm assured its sorted now....again...don't hold breath! I think the choice of hold music being alright, everythings gonna be alright by E17 may have wound me up a little!
Best wishes to the poorly, sleep deprived and of course to those that incredibly qualified gardeners x
Thanks everybody for your responses, although I'm not much wiser!
If this is the first day of Spring, (it's rained nearly all day here) I dread to think what might come next. Wonkywomble - you make me feel tired - and very lazy.
In S. Yorkshire I'd never heard of white rabbits and pinch and kick I just thought we should kick each other on the 1st of the month Honestly I had never heard it until joining this forum, shows how much you learn on here
Lyn happy birthday to your dad, I hope he feels well enough to enjoy his special day
Eventually got into the garden and did some weeding, but did stack 5 barrows of logs under the stairs for the woodburner first. I always feel lazy if I haven't been outside and done something, but in winter it's often impossible.
Dordogne and Norfolk. Clay in Dordogne, sandy in Norfolk.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rabbit_rabbit_rabbit - but it says the origin is unknown. I was brought up in Surrey and we did the same as sg lily.
Grey and cold, forecast yesterday said sun, now it says cloud. Not inviting outside to go a prune.
My Dad was a Londoner but I never heard him use that lily
Lyn- glad you're dad is fine - and it's a grand old age to reach
Think the Arctic's just gradually sliding south...
Glad Wonks is fine Dove - think she's probably crashed her tablet loading up her CV for her profile...
I live in west central Scotland - not where that photo is...
Hello all,
Just a quick peep in - up to my eyes in all sorts and daren't get distracted with the forum.
Hope you are all ok. Will try & catch up soon.
