When doing the final potting on of my chillies, melons and tomatoes I always use 500gm yogurt pots. I burn holes in the bottom using the heated tip of an old phillips screwdriver. I leave the melons in the pots when planting, just cutting of the bottom off the pots (pre-cut, leaving 3 tabs.) This gives me 3 inches in hight of protection around the stem from the water when watering, so avoiding rot. I have done this for several years with no problems.
