New build house - Lawn issues

Hi All,

Newbie here. One year in a new build house, as you can see the lawn is a mess with moss growing.

With the lawn I know that I will need to re turf it. The question I have is about preparation. I have digged up a patch and I have find all sorts, to big stones, sand, clay and tiles. Good old builders. First how deep should I dig to get rid of it all the rubbish for a new lawn and after that what type of soil layer should I use.

With the other side I would like to grow a herb garden and the same question how deep should I dig to get rid of all the bad stuff.

Pictures below - Thanks for any advise.

My current house was a new build and to this day I'm still finding presents from the builders! We dug pretty deep down...maybe 1.5ft over the summer and to be honest just kept getting worse....if we didn't need to lay some foundations I'm afraid I'd not have bothered. In terms of my flower borders I dug down about a foot and used a garden sieve to get rid of most of the nastiest bits like glass, metal, bricks. our lawn was pretty bad quality and it has taken quite a few years of killing weeds in it and re seeding to get it looking full and lush.

My brother had a new build. The lawn was  already laid , over clay subsoil and rubble. The turves dried up like sandwiches, curling at the corners.

He dug it up, removed the large bits of rubble, rotovated in the contents of my mums compost heap plus a few sacks of cheap grobags. He then seeded it and has a lovely lawn.

Have you thought of putting some raised beds in like this

It might be worth checking with your local authority to see if the builders have to remove all waste material from site.  If so, get on to the builder and tell them to come back and clear up their mess.

Hi guys, thanks for the advice. The raised beds is a good idea, will definitively do that.

    Many Thanks

Awe good, ours is 8ft long, we did it because we where battling stones and bricks, we got a tone of top soil from a farm and mixed it with compost, our plants have never looked better : ), good luck with yours

    Hi all,

I know I will need 2 tonnes of top soil and compost mixture. Looking at the following matter.

    Have a few questions.

Should I get a garden roller to flatten the ground before I get the topsoil put in?

Regarding the sides should I leave them and just take of a little of the top because I am scared that I will loosen the floor tiles.

Any advice would be helpful. Many thanks.
