    Maybe the plants that are next to one of them (bamboo and grasses), and bamboo and cornus next to the other are containing them. They have been in the ground for over 5 years now.

    Alchemilla mollis is supposed to be invasive, that's why I bought it for groundcover, but it's not in my garden. Situation and soil obviously make a difference

    As Verdun says, grasses can work really well  - use Phormiums (not strictly grasses of course) in particular . Team them with Cannas, which are one of the best for that type of look.

    Astelias are lovely  Verd -  no use up here unless cossetted unfortunately image

    The lovely Hakonechloa would be excellent  image
