potted jasmine

I was given this potted sweet scented white jasmine as a present, but I am not good with indoor plants and do not have room for them anyway.  It is looking very sad, though there is a beautiful new pale green shoot emerging from the base of the plant.  Can this be moved outdoors and planted in the garden, and if so, what is the best situation for it?  Thank you for any help you can give.
