Hydrangea

image

Have just cut off last years blooms from this hydrangea which has got just too big for my small border so would like to move it to another part of the garden.  Should I cut it right back then move it, leave it as it is and when is the best time to replant.  Also will I need to re plant with a special feed? Would hate for it to die as the flowers are a beautiful deep blue when they first come out.  Look forward to hearing your comments. Thanks.

  • First do a soil test, unless you are positive that all your garden is as acid as the bit where it is growingimage

  • Never thought of that - good point.  Will get a testing kit from the garden centre before I attempt to move.  Any idea when the best time to replant?

  • I don't cut mine back till after the frosts, usually about end March beginning of April. I wouldn't move it till then either when the earth is warmer.

Don't think I'd cut it back any further.

Is your hydrangea in the shade at the moment, some aren't a lover of being in full sun.

Same here SGL, only one year I cut mine back early and all the top buds went black in the frost and I had to do them all again, won't even start till towards the end of March. I wouldn't move that one until end of March if no frost.  I have never fed a hydrangea, unless you want it to stay blue then you can buy some liquid to keep it blue.

Gardening on the wild, windy west side of Dartmoor.

  • Oops - probably should have waited until next month but getting itchy gardening fingers!!  When I lived in Cornwall I used to cut them right back in Jan/Feb and they flowered each year.  When I moved to Yorkshire I did the same thing and they didn't flower that year so only cut to the new buds now.  I will just have to keep fingers crossed that the frost doesn't get to them.  Have heard that they don't like full sun (in partial sun/shade at present) and have a spot at the back of the garden which is again not in full sun.  Will wait a couple of months or when the ground warms up before I attempt to move it.

    Thanks again.

  • Can I please ask about hydrangea too?!

mine is potted, I plan to move into the ground.

does it matter if the soil is not acidic?! It's only white, so it doesn't need to be coloured image

  • Hopefully you will get an expert to answer your question but I was bought a potted hydrangea last year and planted it in a corner of my garden.  It didn't grow much but it survived and I have just cut back the old flower heads (should have waited until end of March) and there are quite a few buds on it so I would just plant it in a nice spot that doesn't get the sun all day but part of the day probably mid to late April.

  • Hi Microagent, I have a couple of white hydrangeas and am very lucky that they stay white. Some turn a very pale blue. I would wait to plant it in the ground until after the frosts  and the earth is a little warmer, perhaps early April.

  • Thank you for your recommendations, guys!!!
