  • Hi Karen,

I have only grown butternut squash once, that was last year.

I would definitely hold back on sowing them just yet, I also have an unheated greenhouse. I think I would wait until the threat of frost is lower. It would probably be best to start them indoors as they will germinate better and you can obviously control the temperature etc.

My butternut squash only grew one squash, which is still in my kitchen now, they store very very well! so its a great fruit to grow!

    Best of luck!

I grow them but I don't sow the seeds until early April and plant them out when the weather warms up. They like warmth. I usually have too many, but they do store quite well.

All marrow family, I sow indoors in individual pots, at the beginning of May, and plant out at the end of May

As above. I put mine out in pots under a coldframe in late May. I average four pods per plant, lovely taste, but unproductive compared to other crops, so I'm not bothering this year. I'se seen them growing on large compost heaps, the heat will help them.

I live in Dordogne, I think summer must come a bit earlier here.

  • Thanks for all the advice everyone I'm looking forward to growing them, I have an allotment so when they are big enough I can put them there we've had some manure deliver so can put them on there I guess thanks again.
  • Hi all,

I bought a packet of 10 squash seeds, found 12 in the packed and 6 have sprouted.  I kept them indoors as I haven't got a greenhouse, but I'm going on holiday for 2 weeks next Monday and was wondering what I should do with them.

I planted out my runner beans in their pots yesterday, as they have all come through - will they be O.K. as the weather is forecast to get colder later this week - I'm in Kent.

I have got one of those plastic Grow houses - if I put the squash plants in there will they be O.K. ?

My neighbour will water the garden and the plants in pots.

Also I was intending to plant the squashes in a large pot, the same size as those with the runner beans in.  Will that be big enough and do I need poles to support them when they grow up ?  I don't have an allotment nor much room in the flower borders, although I do have a long trough I could put them in.

You can but try, plastic grow house probably the best option. They grow into big plants, I've only grown them in the ground. I've never grow runner beans in a pot either. How big are the pots?

  • Thanks for getting back to me so quickly.

The pots are 50cm across x 38cm deep, and I have two pots with 10 poles in each for the runner beans.  I have grown them before but only used one pot, and usually get enough to keep us in beans for a while.

The pot I intend for the squash is the same size.  Should I put all six plants in the pot, do they need support and will poles be O.K. for them ?   I've never grown squash before as you have probably guessed.
