Skimmia

I've got a large Skimmia which never produces berries. How can I tell if it's male or female? Also, if it happens to be female, could I acquire  a self-fertile plant to pollinate it, or would I need a male?

  • Skimmia japonica 'Rubella' is widely available in garden centres.  It is a male form that has cheery red buds followed by pretty white flowers, so is worth growing in its own right. If that doesn't produce berries in your plant then you could  get a known female such as 'Nymans'. There is a hermaprodite form, S. japonica ssp. reevesiana 'Chilan choice', but the RHS only lists 2 suppliers.
