interior advice

rosemummyrosemummy Posts: 2,010

I know there was a good shabby chic thread a while ago, and watching the interior design challenge has got me inspired to liven up indoors a bit, I want to paint the inside of an original victorian fireplace white, i've scrubbed it and still every time i wie over it the cloth comes away black, what should i use on it before i paint with paint that is for metal? Anyone else done this? it's for my little girl's room, we painted the surround pink, black looks so heavy inside now

You need to clean it thoroughly with paint stripper if needed to remove old paint then wire wool or a wire brush to remove any bits.   Wipe clean with a cloth soaked in white spirit then prime it with red oxide paint available from good DIY shops.

Paint with a specialist metal paint.

To use chalk based paint on wood you need to make sure all old paint and varnish is removed and the surface sanded smooth.    I would suggest you get a few books out form the library on restoring old furniture and doing paint effects as, whether you want a neat finish or an aged look, chalk paint will need to be sealed with either wax or acrylic varnish to seal and protect it.

Thankyou both and no, we will never use the fires, I know I'm a bit dippy but I'm not that thick! i did have a scrub with wire wool but after half an hour ran out of steam, it doesn't appear painted, got metal paint thanks for red oxide info obelixx hadn't heard of that

Even if you don't intend to use fires, I'd still go with a paint that is designed for fireplaces (if there's such a thing), because if you ever sell the house the next owners might want to use the fireplace.

I've found the interior design challenge terrifying rather than inspiring.  Most of the creations seem to be just one step up from the disaster Lawrence Llewellyn-Bowen and the others used to come up with years back.

Also, why do so many of the designers look as if they've just stuck a screwdriver into a power socket?

I agree.  They come up with some frightening schemes.
