a new half barrel (well perhaps not quite a half)

My brother asked what I would like for Christmas. I said I'd like a surprise, and he certainly achieved that.

So I now have a really nice half barrel for the garden and no idea what would be the best use for it.

Any suggestions would be gratefully received. Thanks

could you make it into a mini wildlife pond ?  I've always wanted one of those image

Do you have a nice spot in the garden for it Valerie? A specimen shrub or small tree would be good, underplanted with spring bulbs.

The mini pond has always been a popular idea - you have to make sure it's kept in good repair to keep it watertight  image

It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....

I live in west central Scotland - not where that photo is...

I grow  last year in my half barrel tulips for spring and Canna / dahlia / biden / minulus for summer

  • There are a few possible spots for it. I've attached a picture taken this morning. The garden is south facing. The back right corner has a large fibre glass tray under the soil to keep it a bit damp, and I managed to pick up a small butlers sink that I was thinking of putting up there for the frogs etc. Most of the plants we've put up in that corner are doing well, but a few suffered quite badly with mildew, so we've had to move them out. The back left corner is better drained but still stays damper than I had expected it to. At least there's no mildew over there though.

Don't know if that information helps.

Thanks for the suggestions so far.

assuming the barrel is still watertight, you could sink it into the ground and have a miniature water lilly.
