If it's a smallish plant, I'd leave it a season, but if it's a decent sized specimen, I'd prune it.
What sort of cornus?
DUH, schoolboy error on my part.
So prune now or wait till spring, and how far to prune, all the way down.
There's a video on GW site I've just been watching with Joe Swift doing harsh prune on mature specimens...but still interesting to watch. I left mine one spring when it was a nipper (grown form bare root) and did the same when I used prunings from that main plant to make more cornus. Hope that helps http://www.gardenersworld.com/how-to/projects/video-projects/how-to-prune-and-propagate-dogwoods/108.html
