and the bulbs grow little bulblets from the base that grow into more bulbs.Left alone, clumps become very crowded and eventually produce less (or no) flowers but they will have seeded to create new plants by then.
Hmmm, that explains why they keep popping up all over, every year. After flowering I am then moving them to prevent them from getting treaded on. The next year the process starts all over again though.
The one thing I may treat myself to this spring is some snowdrops in the green for my white-ish border. I only have a couple of little clumps of them at the moment.
Can't beat them for letting us know spring's on it's way
It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....
I live in west central Scotland - not where that photo is...
The Galanthus in our Wood do not seem to set seed, looked every year for seed, but never found any and the ovaries seem to be empty too. However, they are spread rather expertly by the moles.
That's interesting Berghill. I shall have to check what mine are doing. The seed pods on the species Galanthus nivalis look full and the snowdrops spread everywhere but I've never collected them or opened anything up.

As with other bulbous plants, they can of course multiply by producing new bulbs, as well as by seed.
