Verbena bonariensis

I've not grown Verbena bonariensis before and I have left them over the winter.

Should I cut them back down to the ground?

Many thanks

keep an eye out for seedlings too. Mine seed everywhere.

  • I'm hoping they have self seeded - gave it a good shake late Autumn -,plenty of room in my borders for them to expand

careful what you ask for Silverlight, they're doing their best at world domination in my garden. image

I would cut them back now.

Based in Sussex, I garden to encourage as many birds to my garden as possible.

Use any side shoots that you cut off as cuttings. They root quickly in gritty compost.

Five cuttings around a six inch pot, tops pinched twice as they grow, will give an instant filler for a space come June, and will flower until the frosts.

This is my Verbena Bonariensis last year, used as a loose screen to mask an unlovely fence.

We have moved since then - but the seedlings that I potted up have survived, and I shall look forward to the flowers later this year.
