Onions

Some of the onions I pulled last year and put in storage, have started to sprout.  Is it feasible to separate the sprouting bulblets out and grow them on this year?

I use the green shoots in cooking.
  • Hi all

I have just recently bought my onion sets and shallot sets from my allotment shop. As well as this have also planted onion and shallot seeds to plant into my allotment when ready.

I keep my sets warm and dry and will plant out when the time is right And the plants from seed when big enough Which will provide an excellent crop to last through the months required. I also have Japenese onion sets in ground now which should be ready by late June for use ahead of the summer crops.

This is the time I get prepared for the start of continuous planting in order to keep my garden fully producing fresh crops over the next 12 months and then the cycle starts again.

Attached photograph of my sets and seeds being planned for the year ahead

  • Love your photo, Chris!  Sorting out the seed packets and planning the next season's crops is such an exciting thing to do at this dull time of year. Roll on the spring!

    hi all

took this photograph this afternoon up the allotment

to start off my onion sets i have used modular trays i got off a gardening friend which gets them going which i have used for the past three years and had great results in return.

they start really well and have a good root plug ready to lift out and plant, and they do not lift once they are planted.

i have also used these trays for other vegtables such as beetroot, lettuce, spinach and they hold 100 plugs each

    happy gardening
