Sparrows

B3B3 Posts: 27,503

Sparrows are eating the flower buds off my shrub. I'd rather have the sparrows than the blossom. However I would prefer if they would eat someone else's!

My question is: Are they just after the blossom buds or will they feast on the leaf buds as well?

In London. Keen but lazy.

  • It's usually just the blossom buds they go for - they're sweet with nectar and a 'high energy' food.  They know what's good for them image

My neighbour feeds them and they have my buds for dessert

Something that is relevant.......I did the RSPB Bird Survey two weeks ago and over the hour and on the first occasion only saw 2 Wood Pidgeons and a Feral Pidgeon and on the second occasion just the same feral Pidgeon again !

Last year it was wall to wall sparrows , robins . black birds . and starlings

B3...its annoying to have your lovely buds been eaten but at least you have Happy and Healthy Sparrows  image

This 'gang' of sparrows live just next door to me and often spend quite some time clinging to the pebbledash surface of my house...They appear to be 'grazing' on the tiny shell and sandy grit particles within the render cement!! Have others noticed similar behaviour??

It could be that they are after the lime in the pebbledash and brick mortar.  With the nesting season coming lime will help form strong eggshells.

Based in Sussex, I garden to encourage as many birds to my garden as possible.
