Verdun, I find many purple leaved plants lose their dark foliage in heavy shade. They seem to need the sun to intensify it.

I find that too Hosta - you need something bright or light behind them to set the dark foliage off as well.

A few structural foliage plants will help Mandy. I use common old Euonymous as a foil for other perennials. Depending on the room you have, you could use Holly (Ilex) or some of the Elaeagnus (not all are evergreen) also. Another useful shrub is Lonicera - the shrubby type used for hedging. You can trim it to shape if you want. Fatsias are good for shade and offer a nice contrast in shape. You can then add a selection of perennials and bulbs such as the ones cornelly, Verdun and Hosta have suggested. White and yellow flowered plants are particularly good for shade.

I'd add carexes to the list as well - many of them are very happy in shade. Heucheras as well - there are plenty of brighter ones. image
