How to grow Soya Beans
in Fruit & veg
As my wife love soya beans and after finally managing to get a packet of seeds I planted the whole pack in a raised bed on my allotment they have flowered and noticed this morning some very small pods. Can someone advise when is the best time to pick these or what is the normal time of year to pick them

Paul, the main two ways to eat soya are either eating the beans when they are still green and cooked in their pods by nipping off the top off the pod and squeezing them into the mouth as a kind of snack (look up "edamame".) The main way though is to wait until the pods are brown and dry, in which case the hard beans are removed, often soaked overnight before being boiled until soft enough to eat. Either way it is important that they are cooked as like most pulses they contain poisons which are destroyed by cooking.
What I amreally to to find out is when they are normally ready to pick. They are getting quite tall and there are some very small pods or what look like pods appearing. Is there a certain time of the year ie Sept or Oct when they should be picked
