I over wintered the tubers of two dahlias I particularly liked and have now put them in pots (sunny South). I'm hoping to get some cuttings later on ...... Will I be able to replant the tubers as well? Which are likely to do better - tubers or cuttings?

  • Mine have been in old cowintering boxes all winter will pot them up middle of march with new compost.

  • Sorry about the spelling just got my I-pad

Last year I grew Lidwig Helfert a cactus dahlia in shades of orange.  It was a wonderful sight in late summer, it glowed, and loads of big blooms.  Bit floppy needed a few stakes

Park Princess, cactus dahlia,  pink and prolific, I had it in a pot, but needed to keep the watering up. 20 in or so

lastly I bought Eveline, but was sold a completely white dahlia, 24 in and a rather upright dahlia.  I have no idea what it was called, but OK for silver, blue, white and yellow bed.

i have kept all the tubers, tho a little muddled up, but can be put in a spare area for cutting.

What dahlias  are you folks growing?

The tubers are likely to be in flower before the cuttings. You really only need to take cuttings if you want to increase the number of plants you have. If you take cuttings you can still plant the tuber and have both.

I know this is an old thread, but I soaked and bedded in dahlias in my heated propagator yesterday. I want to take cuttings, and would recommend the Small Garden Channel on youtube to show how it's done. It's great fun and his method works a treat.
